J Boats 1981 Boats Review and Specs

Year: 1981
Manufacturer: Hooper’s Yachts
Max Mile Range:23,900

The J Boats 1981 Boats, also known as the J/30, was introduced in 1979 and produced until 1986. With a total of nearly 550 units, this boat is designed for both racing and cruising. Its performance exceeds the average 30-foot sailing vessel and can even keep up with larger 35-40 footers. The fractional rig and tapered mast allow for easier handling of the headsail, ensuring excellent sailing performance across a wider range of wind velocities.

Ten Seven, a J/30 from 1981, has undergone a complete exterior refinishing. The hull has been painted with Awlgrip, and the deck has been opened up to replace the wet core. The entire deck has been Awlgripped with a new white on white nonskid applied. The teak handrails have been replaced with modern stainless steel handrails, and the teak toe rails have been replaced with white polycarbonate toe rails. The coaming trim has been replaced with composite material. New windows have been installed, and the deck hardware has been upgraded to modern Harken gear. The bottom has been stripped and resealed with an epoxy barrier coat, and the keel and rudder have been faired with VC17 racing bottom applied. The Headfoil has been removed and replaced with a new Furlex roller furling system. The mast and boom have been painted, and all new halyards, topping lift, and running rigging have been installed. This J/30 is in excellent condition.

Below deck, the boat features a beautiful hand-crafted interior with a 5’11” headroom. It can accommodate up to 6 people, with 2 berths in the bow, 2 in the main salon, and 2 quarter berths aft. The sleeping accommodations are fitted with Navy blue cushions in great condition. The boat also has an optional center table with drop leafs and teak and holly sole. The private head, vanity, and hanging locker are located between the forepeak and main cabin. The galley is situated to port at the companionway, with a top loading ice box and a combo chart table nav station nearby. The cockpit can comfortably seat 6 to 8 people.

This J/30 has a rich history, surviving the famous Fastnet Race where many other boats and sailors were lost at sea. Even after 14 hours in extreme conditions, it only took occasional spray through the louvered companionway board. The exterior upgrades have given this boat a modern appearance, often fooling people into thinking it is a newer J/Boat.
