The Ranger 33 has often been regarded as one of the top 10 iconic fiberglass boats. Designed by Gary Mull, the boats were built by Ranger Yachts, an affiliate of Jensen Marine. The Cal 20 was the boat to beat for inland racing, and his first design, the Santana 22, outperformed the Cal. The Ranger 37 design won the SORC, which was the proving ground at the time, and the Ranger 23 became one of the most successful one design racers. In 2002, an R-33 won Division A in the Pacific Cup, while another one took 2nd place in the same race and 6th overall. In the 70s, O’Days were affordable, Cals were mid-priced, and Rangers were at the higher end of boat production. Initially, Mull wanted a narrow and sleek hull for the R-33, but later settled on the “combo” boat concept, which provided speed on the race course and comfort below for cruisers. Ranger boats also entered the East Coast Market at the time, and the R-33 outperformed its East Coast counterparts, thanks to its graceful sheer, reverse transom, and low cabin trunk. It is elegant yet modern-looking, and its 4,500 lb. lead keel encased in fiberglass, along with the spade rudder, makes it highly responsive. The short spreaders and inboard chain plates offer a tighter sheeting angle for better upwind sailing. The early R-33s had tillers, but wheels became standard, along with the slotted aluminum toe rails, which replaced the original teak. While the R-33’s relatively narrow beam of 9’7″ may not compare to the wide beam of contemporary cruising vessels (which are slower), it still offers over 6′ of headroom and can sleep 6 people comfortably. These boats have withstood extreme weather conditions, completed long-distance travels, and are praised for their appealing appearance, well-balanced design, and great performance on all points of sail.
