Ericson 30 Plus Boats Review and Specs

Year: 1982
Manufacturer: Sea Lake Yacht Sales
Max Mile Range:17,500

During the 1960s to the late 1980s, a company called Ericson Yachts, based in California, manufactured numerous sailboats. One of their initial models was the Ericson 30, which was designed by Bruce King. The E30 had a high bow, sheer, and balanced overhangs, along with strong glass toerails and a tall, rounded coachroof that swept upward in front of the comfortable cockpit. The wide side decks allowed for easy movement forward inside the shrouds. The E30 was marketed as a racer/cruiser and performed well under the C.C.A. rule. It featured a long, swept-back fin keel with 3,000 pounds of encapsulated lead ballast, as well as a rudder hung on a partial skeg to ensure balance on all points of sail. With a 35-foot rig that was considered short by today’s standards, the use of large overlapping jibs was necessary in light winds. The wheel steering was located near the middle of the cockpit sole, making it convenient for single-handed sailing, along with well-placed winches and a traveler positioned just forward of the wheel. Below deck, the boat offered 6-foot-2-inch headroom in a wooden interior with bulkheads bonded to the hull. A vinyl headliner brightened the cabin and provided access to many of the deck fittings. Ten fixed ports allowed plenty of natural light into the cabin, while a spacious forward hatch provided ventilation. The galley was located at the base of the removable companionway steps, featuring a two-burner propane stove and oven to port and a deep sink and icebox. In the saloon, there was a long settee and bookshelf facing a U-shaped dinette, both of which could be converted into large sleeping berths. Forward of the main bulkhead was a hanging locker, and opposite that was a small, well-appointed head and a door to separate the V-berth from the rest of the interior. The split V-berth was elevated above the water tank, 10-gallon plastic holding tank, and stowage area. The balsa-cored deck was solid where hardware was attached, and the chainplates were bonded to the inside of the hull. The deck was bolted to the solid fiberglass hull and fiberglassed for a watertight seal that rarely ca any concerns. Ericson boats from this era typically did not exhibit osmosis issues. Access to the Universal Diesel 16HP engine and its 25-gallon fuel tank was through a door behind the steps or from the cockpit via a spacious locker. The Ericson 30 Plus offered exactly what I was looking for – an affordable boat that was large enough to live on yet small enough for a new sailor to learn on.
